Ah yes. And what a ROCKING performance it was. In Oakland, at the Paramount last night.
Yow.
I thought I had outgrown the concert-going phase long ago in my late-late teens, but if all concerts were as wonderful as the one last night, it might see a resurgence. A concert on a Tuesday. Novel.
And it was cold and rainy. But after a quick and tasty dinner of Pauline's pizza and some greens, off we went. As a venue, I don't think one could pick a better atmosphere than the Paramount.
So art deco. So fabulous. So, interesting.
Thanks to Keely for the comfortable ride.
And certainly thanks to the Angus man for inviting us out.
Now my only disappointment today was to find that the single review I've seen was much less than positive. Ahem. I'm here to rectify that and offer an alternative point of view.
Keep in mind that I've had the love/hate thing with Mr. Declan Patrick McManus. Loved the early work (My Aim is True, songs like the standard 'Pump it Up'), but was much less a fan of 'Spike'.
I cannot tell you how much I hated 'Veronica'. After reading through some choice links and biographies I think I understand now why (co-written by Paul McCartney).
Yep, ok that explains it all.
Regardless, I hadn't kept up with the prolific catalog of one Elvis Costello. And so going to see the show last night had a bit of a 'surprise' element. But it was all good. Much of the material that he did showcase was indeed off of the Delivery Man Album, and it was great. Very rich in texture. Very easy to hear that deep and soulful R&B influence. One of my favorites had to be the actual 'Delivery Man' track.
If you are interested in the entirety of what was played, as follows:

22. Why Don't You Love Me(Like You Used To Do)

24. Pump It Up
25. Hurry Down Doomsday
26. (What's So Funny "Bout)Peace, Love& Understanding?
27. The Scarlet Tide
The only downside to last night's concert was the opening act.
We were a little slow in escaping out of our chairs to hit the bar so we could be spared the full set. And I've forgotten the name of the act already as well (testament to how underwhelming it was).
No matter.
Happy and on cloud 9 after the Elvis performance.
The rain didn't matter after that point.
To top off a fairly perfect evening, a pit stop was made at the bar on the corner (Luka's).
All I remember is (in this order):
Cosmopolitans.
Cat Butt gum (don't ask), but Carol, wherever you got that stuff? I need a few packs.
More Cosmopolitans.
Frites.
Mac & Cheese.
Walk to the car
Tour through all of the Oakland real estate Angus has financed (cool!)
Home.
Bed.
The moral of the story? Don't believe all those other reviews you read out there, believe mine.
Really.
Oh and some crappy pictures taken by my new toy (the Treo 650).
If you are wondering what these are supposed to be. Its ELVIS. Onstage. Under some BLUE lights.
Heh.
By the way, we hope you enjoy the new look of the Binkomonster blog.
The green and purple were getting a bit tiring on the eyes.
