January is a hard month. There is the inevitable letdown from the holidays to cope with. Add to that a dollop of 'being back at work for the man'. Stir in some crappy weather. And finally finish off with zest of 'a million things that you've been putting off that really need to be done'. Crap-o-la.
We took a brief respite yesterday evening. At the oasis known as our castle.
And it wasn't anything complicated. A simple, well-cooked dinner, with a glass of wine (or two, or three). Followed by a most excellent cigar (or the way we like to pronounce it, 'ceeeee-gaar').

It is almost with trepidation that we approach the new year. Well, rather, are plodding through it since we have no choice but to accept it being foisted upon us. Alas that time doesn't run in other directions.
The holidays have been great. Even without all of the merriment, just having a 10 day respite from 'the man' is a most welcome change. No chattering in the email box, no screaming, no phones ringing, and oddly enough, the crackberry eerily silent (well, no choice now, the battery has run down as well).
Add to this recipe two weeks worth of celebrations (with friends and neighbors), and how can you go wrong? The only remorse is that of not being as motivated as we had hoped. The study is still in shambles, but small things have been accomplished here and there. Overall, the castle is looking pretty swanky. Organization has begun to happen on our topmost floor, real shades are up, and there is enough color and style to merit belonging in the pages of Dwell. There was a modern Christmas tree up, cool snowflakes on the front of our building, and more bells and flowers than you could shake a stick at everywhere. And now that the holidays are over, we are back to simplification and organization. De-cluttering. And getting back in shape.
